There are several benefits related to greening a roof such as:

Reduction of urban heat island effect.
Green roofs provide shelter for urban wildlife
Green roofs can signficantly reduce the surface run off volumes and rates of rainfall leaving roofs.
They are good insulators, reducing the need for A/C during summer and can provide some degree of insulation in winter.
They provide sound insulation.
Improve air quality because airborne particles and pollutants are filtered from the atmosphere by the substrates and the vegetation.
Provide amenity spaces in urban areas wich in turn provide a better quality of life for urban residents.
Depending of the structure strength they can be used for growing food.
